Cleaning myths debunked

Frequent Vacuuming

You may have heard that vacuuming too often will cause your carpeting to wear faster. Actually, today's synthetic fibres are designed to hold up even though you vacuum several times a week. In fact, good vacuuming will help to remove any dust and debris that may become embedded deep into your carpet fibres. So, more frequent vacuuming will actually benefit your home and family by eliminating any bacteria, allergens, or other matter that can be harmful. Choose the type of vacuum recommended by the manufacturer, i.e. wool will need a gentler application than nylon, and use the settings for the surface you are working on. A good option for high-traffic areas is a central vacuum unit.

Vinegar, Baking Soda, Bleach

Some people claim that these three items will perform miracles around the house. While each has excellent properties, they are not appropriate for all uses. Vinegar will harm wood, granite, marble, and some metals. Bleach will disinfect but will not remove any dirt. There are some great non-branded alternatives but be sure to research carefully and always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the surface you are cleaning.

This is in the maybe category. Yes, cola will help reduce rust and stains with citric and phosphoric acids. However, it will leave a sticky film that will only attract more grime and feed bacteria. There are a number of eco-friendly cleaning products on the market that will be better for the porcelain and for your plumbing.

Cleaning Combinations

Many combinations of chemicals are perfectly safe, but many can be dangerous. Mixing vinegar and bleach, for instance, creates a toxic chlorine gas. When combined, there are others equally dangerous and harm not just floors or surfaces but can be lethal to you or your family or pets.

Lemon

This is a wonderful, fresh scent, but cleaning your kitchen tools is not good. While they may superficially clean, lemons, even with salt, will not sufficiently sanitize your kitchen, leaving you with chances of bacteria, salmonella, and E. coli, which will leave you and your family very sick.
