Kenora, Ontario
Kenora, previously named Rat Portage, is a small city situated on the Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada, close to the Manitoba boundary, and about 210 km east of Winnipeg by road. It is the seat of Kenora District. The history of the name extends beyond the time of white settlers arriving in the region. The name Kenora is derived from the Ojibwa word Ken-hora meaning "clear water". This refers to either one of two nearby lakes: Lac Seul or Lake of the Woods. The etymological root of both these lake names, ken-, means "large body of water", or "sea". In 1878 Kenora was incorporated as a town. Five years later it was proclaimed a city. It was once a port city with steamships travelling to destinations all over the Great Lakes region. Today it is primarily a tourist town with many seasonal residents and cottagers. Its proximity to nature and abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities make it a popular destination for boaters, fishermen, hikers and hunters alike.
